The founder of Santorini Wines and Food, Dr. Savvas Mendrinos, was born in Santorini and currently lives in the United States. Dr. Mendrinos believes that sharing healthy, delicious food around the table with family and friends is one of life’s greatest pleasures. His decision to import Greek products comes from his commitment to eating well and a desire to share the unique wines and products from Santorini and other parts of Greece with others.
Santorini grows some of the world’s most flavorful grape varietals—thanks to the island’s dry, chalky volcanic soil, copious amounts of sunshine, and the constant Mediterranean wind that brings the flavor of the sea to everything it touches. Santorini’s indigenous grape vines have a history dating back 4,000 years and produce rich earthy wines with a flavor as unique as Santorini itself.
Besides prized wines, Santorini is also known for its intensely flavorful tomato—small in size with a shiny red color. Available fresh for only a short period in summer, the tomatoes are also available concentrated into a delicious paste that allows you to enjoy their flavor year round. These tomatoes not only taste better than any other tomato you’ve tasted, they are also rich in antioxidants and contains higher concentration of lycopene than ordinary tomatoes.
Here are a few additional unique products Santorini Wines and Food offers:
• Cretan extra virgin olive oil—the base of the healthiest of the diets, the Cretan diet.
• Santorini capers and caper leaves, grown on the steep slopes of the caldera, prized for their flavor and rich in vitamins and antioxidants.
• Santorini fava beans, harvested on the island for 3500 years, dried in the sun and then aged to give them a velvety texture and slightly sweet taste. Santorini fava beans are highly nutritious and full of protein.
